Research Book Draft- Due Week 5- 15%
Include the following elements in the Research Book Draft:
Written Components
• Describe the design detail and the time period when it first
originated. Explain the economic, political, social and technological
factors that led to this style becoming fashionable. Be sure to use
accurate terminology (2 pages double spaced, not including images
or the References page).
• Gather research from at least 3 credible sources. This could
include books, peer-reviewed journals, documentary films, museum
publications (including websites), or academic publications
(including websites). Websites such as Wikipedia cannot be used
as sources.
• Include in-text citations in APA format as well as a References
page.
Creative Elements
• Using colour photocopies/high resolution printouts of historic
images of the design detail, fill at least 2 pages of the sketchbook
with a collage. Be sure to neatly cut and mount the images on the
sketchbook paper. Include a References page for the images that
you have used. Websites such as Pinterest and Instagram cannot
be used as sources. The original source for the image must be
used.
• Fill at least 4 pages of the sketchbook with illustrations inspired by
the design detail. Some of these illustrations should be on a figure
while others can be close up sketches of the design detail. Include
as many variations as possible. Be sure to use full colour on at
least 2 illustrations.
• Include 3 fabric swatches that would work for creating an accurate
historical replica of the design in terms of weight, colour/print, and
texture. It is not necessary to match the fibre content of historic
fabrics. Be creative with how the swatches are presented- use
interesting shapes or consider making a quarter scale version of the
design detail. Swatches must be at least 2” x 2” and should be
neatly cut and mounted.
Final Research Book- Due Week 12- 20%
Add the following elements to the Research Book Draft to create the Final
Research Book:
Written Components

researched historic design detail within the last 30 years (since
1989). Describe how the historical detail was re-invented for a
modern audience (1/2 page double spaced).
• Research the designer’s life and approach to fashion. Include
information about where they are from, where they went to school,
and the companies they have worked for. Describe how economic,
3
political, social and technological factors seem to influence their
work. (2 pages double spaced, not including images or the
References page).
• Gather research from at least 3 credible sources. This could
include books, peer-reviewed journals, newspapers, magazines,
company websites, documentary films, museum publications
(including websites), or academic publications (including websites).
Websites such as Wikipedia cannot be used as sources.
• Include in-text citations in APA format as well as a References
page.
Creative Elements
• Using colour photocopies/high resolution printouts of contemporary
images of the design detail, fill at least 2 pages of the sketchbook
with a collage. Be sure to neatly cut and mount the images on the
sketchbook paper. Include a References page for the images that
you have used. Websites such as Pinterest and Instagram cannot
be used as sources. The original source for the image must be
used.
• Using both the historic research and contemporary research
included in the sketchbook as reference, design 3 looks for an
upcoming season. The designs should be illustrated on the figure in
full colour, front view only.
• Include 3 swatches of unconventional materials that would work for
creating these designs. Include the fibre content of each swatch
and describe why it was chosen and where on the new designs it
will be used. Be creative with how the swatches are presented- use
interesting shapes or consider making a quarter scale version of the
design detail. Swatches must be at least 2” x 2” and should be
