Module Learning Outcomes
The following Los are achieved by the student by completing the assignment successfully
1) Demonstrate the basis of the engineering principles of a range of civil engineering disciplines
such as structures, highways, geotechnology, and water engineering necessary to tackle
problems and design solutions associated with multi-disciplinary design projects.
2) Apply those principles to realistic cases of sufficient complexity to require judgment in the
selection of and application of appropriate design principles and material use.
Assignment Objective
This is an assignment concentrated to tackle civil engineering problems and design solutions in a way which
reflects as much as possible the environment in the industry. It helps students to provide adequate ability of
analyzing and designing simple to complex structures in civil engineering area for students of Civil
Engineering program. Students are exposed to the concepts, principles tools, and techniques of analysis and
design of structure right away from initial conceptual design to final construction implementation. This
assessment also help students to write a technical report to address the design work implemented to clients,
subcontractors etc. This design practice should investigate sustainability and safety considerations should be
embodied in the design process.

Assignment Tasks
1) Preliminary Study and Conceptual Design: (100 Marks)
In the Part A (Assignment 1) of Design Project, Preliminary Study and Conceptual Design submission to client
approval, you will be responsible to perform preliminary study including study of location, site investigation,
and soil tests and then come up with two initial conceptual designs. Out of the 2 conceptual plan recommend
anyone (Ground floor plan is ok). Once the final plan has been approved/recommended show the sectional
elevation of the ground floor and the first floor (No need to show the plan of the remaining floors unless and
until plan is different). Each individual will produce a technical report to the client addressing the technical
and commercial implications. Any changes suggested by the client/module leader will be submitted by the
end of part A and will be continued to use in Part B (Assignment 2).
Following are the expected tasks during completion of Part A:

  1. During this phase, the group will prepare two architectural design plans. The elevation should identify
    significant differences such as stability, form, and constructability between two alternatives and make
    recommendations in favor of one solution.
  2. Reports should also consist of environmental & sustainability limitations; health & safety risk assessment;
    innovative methods/aesthetics and buildability attributes.
  3. This report should be approximately/ maximum 1500 words apart from design and drawings. AutoCAD,
    Revit Architecture, or any other software can be used to draw plans.
    Problem Definition:
    The estimated time duration for construction of the Mall in city of Muscat is 3yrs i.e from 21st March 2018-
    22nd May 2020. Due to the ongoing construction of the mall, client has decided to build a multistorey building
    with help of consulting companies/contractors. The plot area of the client is 10,000 sqft. The reason for this
    multistorey building project is that the client could later accommodate staffs/employees working in the Mall
    in that building as rented apartments and also for their families. The client has also decided that there should
    be provisions of supermarket; a restaurant, barbershop, and a laundry room which are to be provided at the
    ground floor. The plan (room dimensions) of these requirements could be varied accordingly. The building
    should accommodate 150 members. Based on this; built-up area, number of floors, number of apartment in
    each floor should be decided. Parking provisions are also to be provided. Parking could be provided in the
    basement (underground floor) or outside depending on the plot area of the client and built-up area decided
    by you.
