• Demonstrate your knowledge of course material.

• Your analysis is sociological, that is you consider:
o Structural factors, groups, not individuals
o Use theory and concepts, not personal opinions or advocacy
o Causes, outcomes, and collective beliefs
o Consider history and social patterns

• Use of sources should be brief and only used when significant. Consequently, examples are used to support your claims not summary.
• Use ASA style citation format (parentheticals for in-body citation)

• Essay is to be fluidly written with no spelling or grammar errors

• Title page & page numbers required
o Page numbering begins on first page of essay not title page

• Clear and strong thesis statement
o Remember, the body of paper needs to support your thesis statement

• Explain how your paper is organized in the essay

How to organize your paper:
Paragraph 1 (think 4-5 sentences per paragraph)
• Introduction (short, significant, and to the point)
• Define the problem or issue
• Thesis statement (here I am looking for your argument)
o “My thesis is”, “My argument is”
• Explain how your paper is organized
• Transition sentence to next paragraph

Body paragraphs (remember, your essay needs to support your thesis statement)
• Use topic sentences
• Use theories/concepts
• Use evidence (do not summarize, this should be brief, focus on analysis)
• Demonstrate your knowledge of course material
• Sociologically assess your sources

Conclusion
• Recap the significance of your essay
• Explain how the evidence you used supports your argument.
