Canadian economy

Although Canada is rightly considered to be a wealthy country, there nevertheless are perennial
concerns that the Canadian economy and business system has been too reliant on staples exports and
not supportive of a competitive or innovative manufacturing sector. Using readings by Stanford,
Belshaw and Nicholson, briefly explain why this seemingly paradoxical pattern has emerged and
what contemporary policy challenges are raised by it.
